How Much Does a Bathroom Remodel Cost in Sonoma County?

Bathroom remodel costs in Sonoma County run higher than state and national averages, for the same reasons everything in this market does — labor rates, material costs, and permit fees are all elevated relative to inland California. Here's what we actually see on our jobs, broken down by scope so you can calibrate your budget before you call anyone.

The Short Answer: What You'll Spend

A basic bathroom refresh — new fixtures, tile surround, vanity, and toilet — runs $25,000 to $45,000 in Sonoma County for a full-service contractor. A mid-range full remodel with new tile floor, custom tile shower, floating vanity, and updated lighting runs $50,000 to $85,000. A high-end primary bathroom with a freestanding tub, large-format tile, radiant heat floor, frameless glass enclosure, and custom cabinetry runs $90,000 to $150,000 and up.

Those ranges are wide because bathrooms vary enormously in size and scope. A 50 sq ft guest bath and a 200 sq ft primary suite are completely different projects. The breakdown below should help you figure out where your project lands.

What Drives Bathroom Remodel Costs

Tile — Usually the Biggest Variable

Tile is where bathroom budgets diverge most dramatically. Ceramic tile for a standard shower surround costs $8 to $15 per square foot installed. Porcelain large-format tile (24x48 or similar) runs $18 to $30 installed. Natural stone — marble, travertine, slate — runs $25 to $50 or more installed, depending on the material and layout complexity. Heated tile floor adds $15 to $25 per square foot on top of the tile cost.

Layout matters too. A straight-set tile install is the baseline. Herringbone or diagonal patterns add 15 to 25 percent to labor. Custom mosaic or hand-set natural stone adds more. Most of our clients in Sonoma County opt for large-format porcelain — it photographs beautifully, wears well, and hits a sweet spot on cost.

Shower Enclosure

A standard fiberglass shower insert is the cheapest option — $1,500 to $3,000 installed — but we almost never see it in full remodels because it looks like what it is. A custom tile shower with a framed glass door runs $8,000 to $14,000. A frameless glass enclosure with heavy-gauge hardware adds $3,000 to $6,000 over a framed option. A walk-in shower with no door — a popular choice in primary baths — eliminates the glass cost but requires more square footage and careful waterproofing.

Vanity and Plumbing Fixtures

A stock vanity with a standard top and basic fixtures: $1,500 to $3,500 installed. A semi-custom or floating vanity with vessel or undermount sink and mid-range faucet: $3,500 to $7,000 installed. A fully custom built-in vanity with premium fixtures: $8,000 to $18,000. If you're moving plumbing — shifting the sink location or adding a double vanity where a single was — add $1,500 to $4,000 for the plumbing rough-in.

Freestanding Tub

A freestanding tub is a significant line item on any remodel. The fixture itself runs $1,500 to $8,000 depending on material and manufacturer. Installation — including the floor-mounted filler, supply lines, and drain — adds $1,200 to $3,000. The floor tile around it needs to be continuous and properly supported. Total budget item for a freestanding tub: $4,000 to $12,000 installed.

Labor and Permits

Labor is the largest single cost in a bathroom remodel — typically 40 to 50 percent of the total. Sonoma County labor rates for tile setters, plumbers, and electricians are among the highest in the state. Permits for a bathroom remodel run $1,500 to $3,500 depending on scope. If you're moving walls or changing the structural layout, add engineering costs.

What a Real Project Costs: Three Examples

Guest bath refresh, 55 sq ft: New toilet, vanity, and fixtures. New tile floor. Painted walls. No layout changes. Budget: $28,000 to $38,000.

Primary bath full remodel, 100 sq ft: Custom tile shower with frameless glass, new tile floor, floating vanity, updated lighting and ventilation. No layout changes. Budget: $65,000 to $90,000.

Primary suite bathroom, 180 sq ft: Freestanding tub, large-format stone tile, walk-in shower, double vanity with custom cabinetry, radiant heat floor, design-forward lighting. Budget: $120,000 to $160,000.

The Hidden Costs in Bathroom Remodels

Bathrooms have more surprise costs per square foot than any other room in the house. Here's what catches people:

  • Subfloor damage: Water gets under tile and rots subfloor. We find this on a significant percentage of full demo projects. Replacing subfloor adds $1,500 to $4,500 depending on extent.
  • Mold remediation: Wet walls in older bathrooms sometimes have mold behind the tile. Proper remediation before new tile goes in is non-negotiable. Costs vary widely.
  • Outdated electrical: Adding a heated floor, a new exhaust fan with humidity sensor, or proper lighting circuits often reveals electrical panels or wiring that needs upgrading.
  • Out-of-level floors: Older homes have floors that have moved over decades. Getting tile flat on an unlevel subfloor requires a mud bed or self-leveling compound — add $500 to $2,000.

How to Get an Accurate Number for Your Project

The only way to get a real number is to have someone walk the bathroom with you. We look at the existing plumbing, electrical, tile conditions, and subfloor — and we give you a realistic range, not a low number designed to win the bid. Call us at (707) 789-1946 and we'll schedule a site visit. We'll walk through your bathroom, answer your questions, and give you an honest picture of what it'll take.
